You can do some customization here, but it's fairly limited. The first stage of gameplay, called Cell, mimics what you might reasonably expect to occur in the life of a microorganism-lots of swimming, eating, and being chased by larger creatures. But Spore does give players plenty of options to switch later in the game. You're then prompted to decide whether you prefer your creature to lead a carnivorous or omnivorous existence, a choice that will affect your its existence in a number of ways. This soon gives way to the creation of life in a primordial ooze and the beginning of your creature's existence as a cell. The game opens with the fiery birth of your planet. I'm not the most avid gamer on staff, so being tasked to provide a full rundown of the game feels like being asked to write a book report about the Encyclopedia Britannica. The concept of reviewing the game is a bit overwhelming, to say the least.

The larger game includes all the features of Creature Creator, but the preview barely manages to scratch the surface of the astonishing breadth and diversity available in the full version of Spore. Wright and Electronic Arts managed to tide over some of the more rabid fans back in June of this year with the release of Creature Creator, a $10 utility that let players create a diverse array of alien creatures. Saying that Spore is addictive is a gross understatement: The game grabs you with a pair of newly evolved talons and won't let go.įirst announced by the creator of Sim City and Sims designer, Will Wright, three and a half years ago, Spore-a "massively single-player online game"- became one of the most eagerly awaited games in recent memory. I mention this not as a knock against the game-if anything, I blame the hardware-but rather to highlight that, as my game dissolved before my eyes, it felt like I had been ripped from a sound sleep and rudely dumped back into this reality, after spending an undeterminable amount of time fighting, allying, eating, mating, and generally evolving in my own self-contained universe.
